When you are running your business at home, one of the greatest things you can do for yourself is getting some help: outsourcing.
Oh I know, I can hear the collective whine from here. Entrepreneurs can be a funny sort. We can take our “independence” too seriously at times! We take a certain pride in being “the chief chief cook and bottle washer,” or the one whose responsibilities include everything in the business.
Certainly, starting out, most new businesses are run just that way – simply out of necessity.
But there comes a time when you are simply in your own way. This need to do everything is holding your business back from growth and enslaving you. In my opinion, most home business owners wait too long to ask for help!
You say that you are a small business and that you can’t afford to outsource. I think you DEFINITELY need to outsource and the sooner the better.
Did you ever read Tim Ferriss’ book The Four Hour Work Week? (or The Four Hour Work Week: Book Summary of Timothy Ferriss Best Selling Book (4 Hour Work Week in 20 Minutes or Less – no, I did not make that up and am not kidding – it is really a book!)
He suggests that you can outsource every task that you dislike and end up only working 4 hours per week instead of 40 or 60 or 80!
Now, maybe that is to much for you but outsourcing one or two things will free up your time and in so doing, give you a sense of freedom in your business and make you less likely to burn out. Let’s look at some of the advantages of outsourcing for your small or home business.
Advantages: Why You Should Outsource
- Having more time is definitely the top reason for outsourcing. You went into business for yourself for all sorts of reasons – resenting your business and having your family resent you AND your business because it takes up all your time is NOT one of them!
- The second reason for outsourcing is to grow your business and make more money. What? It is going to cost me money to pay people to help me. How am I going to make more money? Easy, you will spend your time doing income generating activities and things that you are good at.
- Let the experts do what they are good at! Already twice as much is being done in your business! You should already be seeing results.
Think of it this way. If you are a baker, baking is your thing. You are good at it. You can bake circles around the rest of us. But accounting is a big pain in your neck. You absolutely hate it and you are not good at it and it takes up too much time.
Exactly! It needs to be done. But you are not good at it and because of that, it takes way more time than it should or is necessary! That time could be spent baking and making money! Every hour you spend working on accounting is time you are not getting paid. It is already costing you.
THAT is the elephant in the room. You are already paying dearly for the accounting to be done. Probably more than it would cost to have a service do those books for you.
The folks at the accounting service are experts. Accounting is their thing. They can have the work DONE in the time it takes you to figure out how to enter the bill in Quickbooks!
When you outsource strategically, you will be able to build your business bigger and more quickly than you thought.
You’ll see the better results quickly. If you are a butcher or baker or candlestick maker, a dog trainer or a blogger or a personal trainer … your expertise is not in social media marketing or email marketing. You may be good at hanging out on Facebook, but are you good at getting leads and customers and sales from Facebook?
Give that over to a professional while you bake or train or blog and you can sleep better, getting your work done while the business is being marketed well at the same time!
And a cool side effect of outsourcing? You will start taking yourself and your business more seriously. You are the owner and the CEO, not just the worker in your business.
So now you see that it is time to grow your business by de-stressing. Maybe you need a virtual assistant for many tasks? Maybe you need contractors with expertise for particular tasks here and there?
Here are some tasks that you might consider outsourcing:
- financial tasks such as accounting and tax preparation;
- administrative and customer service
- content creation
- social media promotions
- lead generation
- website creation and maintenance
- and maybe housecleaning!
Even if you have a one person business on the end of your kitchen table or in the corner of your garage, with the right team of outsourcers, you can become as efficient as a big corporation! In fact a Virtual Assistant could be working on a lot of little tasks while you sleep. Imagine that. Just like the elves in your childhood stories, getting the work done while you sleep.
OK. Not all of it. You will still have to work! But you will work in your expertise in the reason that you started your business to begin with! So go ahead and start growing your business!
Some places to start might be:
It’s time for you to prioritize and maximize your time! Focus on the responsibilities and money generating activities, use technology to automate where possible and get help for the administrative tasks and you’ll see your streamlined business grow by leaps and bounds.
All while having more time with the family! Who knew?!
